Big 12 seeding at stake for women at Missouri

The ISU women’s basketball team will be playing for seeding in the Big 12 Tournament when the team travels to Missouri Saturday for its final Big 12 road game of the season.

The last time the two teams met in Ames Feb. 7, Missouri (14-11, 5-9 Big 12) shot an impressive 54 percent from the field on its way to an 81-62 victory.

The Cyclones (13-12, 6-8) struggled shooting the ball, connecting on 33 percent from the field, leading to 26 defensive rebounds for the Tigers. Seniors MyEsha Perkins, Evan Unrau and Stretch James combined for 55 points against the Cyclones.

Over the next four games, the Cyclones shot 46 percent from the field in a loss to Colorado and wins over Baylor, Kansas and Nebraska. Iowa State followed that by shooting 25 percent from the field in a 68-33 loss at Kansas State Wednesday night.

“We have to get back to where we are much more efficient on offense,” ISU women’s basketball coach Bill Fennelly said. “We played four really good games. Obviously, our offense was nonexistent against Kansas State.”

To add to the trouble for the Cyclones, Missouri boasts the best blocking team in the Big 12, averaging 6.5 blocks a game.

“When you play a shot blocking team, you know they’re going to block some shots, but at the same time if you’re aggressive, your positioning is good, maybe you can get a couple of fouls and get to the free throw line,” Fennelly said.

“Against a team like Missouri, that’s going to be very important.”

Iowa State leads the Big 12 in free throw percentage, shooting 77 percent from the charity stripe.

Missouri is coming off a 78-76 win at Nebraska, only its second since winning in Ames. Missouri has lost four straight home games, including a 92-90 double-overtime heartbreaker to Kansas State. Unrau had 40 points for the Tigers in the losing effort.

Despite Missouri’s recent struggles at home, Fennelly believes his team will be facing a motivated Tiger team.

“It’s Senior Day for Missouri, so there will be a lot of emotion going on,” Fennelly said. “They’ve lost a couple of very tough games at home to some very good teams.”

“[Our players] have the mindset, I think, that they can play with about anyone in our league on a given night,” Fennelly said. “Our league is a lot about matchups, more than any other league that I have been in. We have to go back on the road and do the things that road teams do.”

Game time is 2 p.m. Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net.
