Crack cocaine found in Ames

For the second time in less than a month, Ames has been the site of a crack cocaine arrest.

Ames police officers and members of the Central Iowa Drug Task Force went into two houses on Saturday and walked away with about half a pound of crack cocaine between the two, said John Tinker, program coordinator for the Department of Public Safety.

Kevin Miller, 4370 Maricopa Dr. #106, was arrested at his home Saturday and charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

Tinker said a few thousand dollars in cash was also found.

The task force conducted another raid in Gilbert around the same time, Tinker said, where a woman was arrested on similar charges.

“I think it was sort of a boyfriend/girlfriend thing,” Tinker said.

He said the task force found about half a pound of crack cocaine combined in the two residences.

Tinker said Saturday’s raids were part of a continuing drug investigation the police department has been conducting in the area. The task force was looking into a possible connection to cocaine seized on Jan. 28.

The seizure in January by the Ames Police Department and the Central Iowa Drug Task Force was conducted at 2810 Grand Ave. #3. Andrew Shannon, 23, and his girlfriend, Mineu Vahid, 23, were arrested.

Sgt. Howard Snider of the Ames Police Department was present at the investigation on Maricopa.

Snider said officers went in with a warrant for Miller’s arrest on a charge of possession with intent to deliver. He said he had a case on Miller and knew he was in the house.

The Ames Police Department and the Central Iowa Task Force also had a warrant for drugs in case they found any in the home.
