Wrestlers take down Huskers
February 27, 2004
ISU wrestling fans saw the Cyclones reach two milestones during Thursday night’s meet at Hilton Coliseum: Head coach Bobby Douglas recorded his 400th career victory, and senior Zach Roberson notched his 100th win as the Cyclones destroyed the Nebraska Cornhuskers 22-9.
The second-ranked Cornhuskers simply did not have what it took to quiet the red-hot Cyclones as Iowa State put the finishing touches on what has been a magnificent stretch of wins at home.
When the visibly energized Cyclones took to the mat, a pulse ran through the crowd that sparked a level of excitement not often matched during a regular-season meet. The fans knew there was more at stake tonight than another Big 12 victory.
“I’ve been in it a long time and I’m just so fortunate to have so many great wrestlers who created this 400th win, they deserve the credit,” Douglas said.
Aside from Douglas reaching the 400 mark, Roberson’s milestone drew applause from the crowd.
After defeating Nebraska’s 10th-ranked Matt Keller, Roberson threw his hands in the air victoriously and acknowledged who he called the best fans in the country.
“It’s been a great four years and a great decision to come to school here, and I’m glad I got to wrestle for Bobby and the Cyclone fans,” Roberson said.
Roberson was hitting on all cylinders as his wrestled his way into Iowa State’s record book as one of 28 wrestlers since 1970 to reach the 100-win mark.
“The last home dual meet, the 100th win, and I got a major [decision], I feel like I wrestled really well, it was everything I could hope for,” Roberson said.
Shining moments for Nebraska’s team were few and far between during the meet, although No. 1 125-pounder Jason Powell did provide the loyal Cornhusker fans in attendance something to cheer about. Powell’s win over Iowa State’s Grant Nakamura was one of only three Nebraska match wins.
The Cyclones hope to take some momentum from Thursday’s victory into the upcoming Big 12 Tournament March 6 in Ames.
“We have to prepare for four other teams now, it’s going to be a very difficult Big 12 [Tournament], the toughest we’ve ever had,” Douglas said.
“It’s going to be fun. I’m looking at it to enjoy myself, go out there and have fun. This is our hometown, this is Ames. I’m just glad it’s here at Iowa State,” Cyclone wrestler Nick Passolano said.
