LETTER: Picture worth a thousand letters
February 17, 2004
The picture on the front page of the Daily on Monday was certain to cause controversy in the ISU student population when they woke up at the crack of noon and read their papers.
However, whatever the merits of the scene depicted in the photo are, the photo itself is not newsworthy, or even an appropriate picture for an ISU publication, much less it being on the front page of it.
First off, the article the picture goes with is about a conference. The picture does not show a scene from the conference. It adds nothing to the story, which does not mention any sort of party scene.
Secondly, neither of the students in the picture are ISU students. If at least one was, then it could be said the picture was appropriate for the Daily. But, since this was not there, the picture should have been left off.
Thirdly, the front page of the paper should be devoted to the news. This picture is not newsworthy. The conference might have been, but this picture was not.
It would have been more appropriate to place a picture from Iowa State’s big win over Texas in place of the current one and changed nothing else.
The Daily should be more careful when choosing front page material in the future, because this type of material seriously questions the journalistic professional ability of the staff.
