Swimmers and divers split meets

The ISU swimming and diving team, in its final weekend of competition before the Big 12 Championships, beat Nebraska-Omaha Friday before losing to Nebraska Saturday.

The Cyclones took first place in 11 of 12 events in a 169-91 win in Friday’s meet in Omaha, Neb.

“I was very pleased with the way we competed,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “It was a very unusual order of events and it was a lot of fun to swim in ‘off’ events.”

One standout was senior Kim Schmugge, who won the 25 freestyle in 11.54. Schmugge was also on the 100 medley relay team that won with a time of 50.73.

The trio of Sam Dyshaw, Brita Benson and Schmugge won the 150 butterfly relay (1:18.88). In the 150 breaststroke relay, Benson, Petra Plaminkova and Shannon Parker placed first.

The ISU divers also had a very strong showing.

On the 1-meter board, Linda Wagner took second and Hillary Nichols third with 265.80 and 233.40, respectively.

Iowa State’s bid to finish regular season competition with two straight wins was stopped by Nebraska in Lincoln Saturday.

The Cyclones fell 171.5-126.5.

“Overall, I think we came out a little flat,” Sorenson said. “As the meet went on, we did seem to pick up our intensity.”

The Cyclones were led by Breunig and Plaminkova. Breunig recorded a season-best time in the 100 freestyle, finishing first in 52.47, and second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.21. Plaminkova won the 400 individual medley and 200 breaststroke.

For the divers, Wagner won the 1-meter with 281.17. Nichols was third with a score of 251.91. On the 3-meter board, Wagner took third, followed by Nichols.

Next up for the Cyclones is the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, Feb. 25-28.
