Spring Career Fair hits Iowa State
February 18, 2004
Nearly 140 businesses will welcome students to Hilton Coliseum from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday for “Brighten Your Future” Spring Career Fair, presented by the Colleges of Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
“The climate is somewhat chilly [in hiring],” said Kathy Wieland, director of career services for the College of Business. “It’s a mixed bag. Some companies are here to hire, and some are here for PR.”
Despite the slower economy, College of Business Dean Labh Hira said he is hopeful for his students.
“There is always a market for good people,” Hira said, “and the MBA market is looking very bright.”
Wieland agreed.
“You need to be the package deal,” she said. “That means having strong credentials, strong leadership, and overall involvement.”
Wieland said she suggested researching organizations prior to the Career Day.
Career Day is only one part of a job search.
“Go looking for what you want, seek them out, and wait in line,” Wieland said.
“The ball is in your court. The student needs to own what happens,” she said.
Wieland said she encourages freshmen to go to learn the environment and seek advice from recruiters.
“Whatever you’re looking for — full-time, internships, summer positions — it’s here,” she said.
