Make or break time for ISU men’s basketball team

After being outscored 253-174 in their last three games, the Cyclones are looking to break back into the win column Saturday when they face No. 11 Texas in Hilton Coliseum at 3 p.m.

Iowa State (13-7, 4-5 Big 12) has lost three straight and is coming off a 90-59 loss Wednesday at the hands of Kansas State, which is tied for ninth in the Big 12. The loss was Iowa State’s 21st consecutive Big 12 road loss.

“If you go and don’t throw out your ‘A’ game in this conference, you get beat bad,” head coach Wayne Morgan said.

Freshman Curtis Stinson said the losing streak hasn’t affected the team’s confidence.

“Nobody is down. I’m not down. It’s just a part of basketball,” Stinson said. “You win some, you lose some. We just went down three games in a row, and we’re just going to have to bounce back and keep fighting. Never give up.”

Senior Jake Sullivan said the team can go one of two ways from here.

“Adversity is either going to make you fold or make you tougher and better from it,” Sullivan said.

Iowa State hasn’t defeated Texas since Feb. 22, 2000, when Marcus Fizer scored 35 points in a 89-77 win. The Cyclones lost 70-50 last season in Austin.

Texas beat Baylor 84-58 Wednesday. The Longhorns improved to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Texas’ three losses have come against Arizona, Duke and Oklahoma State, which are currently No. 15, No. 1 and No. 10, respectively.

Senior Royal Ivey is leading the Longhorns with 11.5 points and four assists per game. Sharpshooter Brian Boddiker averages 9.9 points per game and has hit 48 percent of his 3-point shots.

“Texas is a very good team; they have very good players,” Morgan said. “It’s not so much the opponent. We have to do a better job with us right now.

“We have to believe in ourselves that we can do it. It’s as simple as that.”

Texas has a big advantage with its deep bench — 10 different players have started a game this season. The Longhorns have 11 players who average more than 13 minutes per game.

It will be a matchup between two of the conference’s best freshmen Saturday. Texas’ 6-foot-5 P.J. Tucker has been one of the best performers for the Longhorns, winning Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors three times this season. Iowa State’s Stinson has also won the award three times this season. Tucker is averaging 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

“We have to find out what people are made of. That’s the challenge right now,” Sullivan said. “You have to look yourself in the mirror right now and ask what you’re made of and how much you want to finish this season off on a good note. That’s what it comes down to.”

Iowa State only has eight games remaining before the Big 12 Tournament.

“It’s an eight-game season now and that’s how we have to look at it,” Sullivan said. “We have to come together as a team. You win as a team.”
