January 26, 2004
The ISU women’s swimming and diving team dropped two meets at the Beyer Hall pool Friday and Saturday, breaking a four-meet winning streak.
Friday, the Cyclones fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 103-140.
Senior Lara Skoog recorded season-best times in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle, placing third in the 500 with a time of 5:04.95.
“I was happy with Lara’s times,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “I was pleased with the effort we gave as a team.”
The Cyclones had another strong outing by senior Petra Plaminkova, who placed first in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke with times of 2:07.02 and 2:19.40, respectively.
Plaminkova was also a part of the 200 medley relay team that placed second with a time of 3:54.20. Iowa State got a boost from Kim Rogers, who placed first in the 200 butterfly recording a time of 2:08.38.
Freshmen Lauren Breunig and Chelsey Walden collected additional points for the Cyclones.
Breunig placed second in the 200 freestyle recording a time of 1:53.29 and Walden was runner-up in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle with times of 10:23.92 and 5:03.73, respectively.

In the 3-meter competition, the tandem of Wagner and Herman fell to third and fourth with scores of 236.70 and 223.13, respectively.
Cyclones unable to return to winning ways against Missouri
Coming off its first loss in four meets to Kansas, Iowa State’s bid to get back on the winning track was stopped by Missouri when the Cyclones fell to the Tigers 114-186 Saturday.
In a day that saw eight seniors honored at their last home meet, none stood out like Plaminkova who again placed first in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley with times of 2:21.21 and 2:08.17, respectively.
“Petra had another strong meet,” Sorenson said. “We are really going to miss her next year.”
The other seven seniors honored were Skoog, Wagner, Kim Chrun, Sam Dyshaw, Megan Flaws, Susanne Notbohm and Kim Schmugge.
Walden briefly changed the momentum by placing first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.57.
Breunig finished first in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 1:53.49 and also placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.09.
On the 1-meter board competition, junior Gail Olson placed first with a score of 251.77.
The Cyclones now have two weeks to prepare for their final two meets of the season.
Iowa State will travel to Omaha, Neb., Feb. 6 to take on Nebraska-Omaha. The Cyclones will then take a short trip to Lincoln to wrap up conference competition against Nebraska Feb. 7.
Following those meets, the Big 12 Conference championships begin Feb. 22 in Austin, Texas.
