Cyclones’ road woes continue

Cold shooting and poor rebounding hampered the ISU men’s basketball team Saturday as it lost 63-59 to Baylor in Waco, Texas, extending the Cyclones’ Big 12 road losing streak to 19.

Iowa State was 0-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half and continued to shoot bricks in the second half, making only one 3-pointer out of 14 tries for the game.

“We shot the ball very poorly tonight and got outrebounded,” ISU head coach Wayne Morgan said in a press release. “If we can’t hold our own on the boards, we are not going to win on the road.”

Both teams struggled to make shots early in the game. Twelve minutes in, Baylor had connected on only 4 of 20 shots and the Cyclones were 3-of-11 from the field, but still led by a score of 10-8.

Senior Jake Sullivan scored 11 points but had no 3-pointers and sophomore John Neal banked in the only ISU make from deep. Sullivan shot 16 percent from the field.

“Jake Sullivan shot the ball poorly tonight, but that’s going to happen,” Morgan said. “I have seen plenty of good shooters have bad nights.”

The Cyclones were down 54-46 with three minutes left and rallied with Sullivan’s five straight free throws. Iowa State later closed the margin to 54-53 when Curtis Stinson found Jackson Vroman for an easy bucket.

But Baylor proved to be too much, holding off the surge with free throws and solid defense.

“Baylor played very hard tonight, give them a lot of credit,” Morgan said. “They played a hell of a game.”

First-year Baylor head coach Scott Drew got the first Big 12 win of his career. The Bears moved to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

“I’m excited to not hear ‘Are you going to win in the Big 12?’ anymore,” Drew said in a press release.

Baylor outrebounded Iowa State 42-33 and won with the school’s fourth-lowest winning point total ever.

Drew said a crowd of 5,837 backed up the Bears in the closing minutes and helped the team fend off the late ISU rally.

“The crowd was really involved and they really got us going through the latter part of the game,” Drew said.

Iowa State shot 44 percent from the field compared to Baylor’s 37 percent.

“They made the shots when they needed them and we didn’t,” Morgan said. “They were able to sustain their defense all night and kept us off our game.”

Stinson led Iowa State, scoring 16 points and collecting three steals. Vroman added 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Cyclones fell to 2-2 in the conference and face Texas A&M Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.
