ISU women triumph … again
January 21, 2004
Bill Fennelly said his team didn’t practice well on Sunday.
But on Monday, his team practiced better.
A lot better.
Behind freshman Lyndsey Medders’ 15 second half points — part of her game-high 20 — Iowa State defeated its second consecutive ranked team at home as it cruised to a 69-51 Big 12 Conference win over No. 15 Oklahoma at Hilton Coliseum Tuesday.
“I told them before the game ‘You’re going to play great. I have a lot of confidence in you.’ That was probably not the greatest pregame speech I’ve ever given,” Fennelly said after his team improved to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12.
“We didn’t practice all that well on Sunday. It was terrible. I was really upset with them. I thought Monday, we practiced as well as we practiced all year. They were energized. They had a great sense of purpose. I really felt good about this game.”
The Cyclones started the game cold as the Sooners went up 11-1 with 15:09 left in the first half. Iowa State went 1-of-12 shooting as Oklahoma (13-3 overall, 3-2 Big 12) made five free throws during the quick spurt.
After an ISU timeout, senior Erica Junod rebounded a missed Oklahoma shot and dished a pass to junior Mary Fox, who made a 12-foot jump shot to start a 14-1 run.
During the run, junior Katie Robinette and Medders each scored five points.
Fox said the team had some struggles in the first few minutes of the first half.
“Our posts were struggling,” Fox said. “I think we needed to play defense. Obviously, if we couldn’t play defense then they would be able to score. We just had to wait for our offense to score.”
Iowa State went into the locker room up 24-21.
Medders hit a 3-pointer to spark a 25-6 opening run to start the second half. She connected for eight points during the run. She finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor in only 27 minutes.
In her first four games, Medders was averaging 16.5 points per game. In the last eight games she’s played, she only averaged 4.9 points per game.
“It’s been a roller coaster. Teammates, coaches, everybody has told me that freshman year is not going to be the easy year,” Medders said. “But I’m surrounded by my teammates, since they won. For me, I’m happy that we won regardless of how many points we scored against a good Oklahoma team.”
The Sooners were 2-for-20 from the 3-point line while Iowa State was 8-for-16 beyond the arc.
Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale said her team should have scored more points in the first few minutes of the first half.
“We were guarding the heck out of them,” Coale said. “They were having trouble getting a shot up, getting a clean look.
“We didn’t capitalize. I knew that at the point, we were missing a great opportunity. Give Iowa State credit. They hit open shots and made plays.”
Iowa State will host its third consecutive ranked team at home when it faces No. 16 Colorado at 1 p.m. Sunday.
