LETTER: Dairy Farm still part of Iowa State
January 20, 2004
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Iowa State Daily ran a front-page story (“Hunziker & Associates to buy dairy farm land”) that erroneously stated the ISU Dairy Teaching Farm had been sold.
The 107-acre Dairy Teaching Farm has not been sold. Iowa State owns the land and has no intention of selling it. The land and its buildings are part of campus, and the university will retain them for future use.
The 53 acres of land purchased by Hunziker & Associates was owned by the ISU Foundation and located between Mortensen Road and Highway 30. The College of Agriculture had leased the land for growing grain and forage to feed animals at the Dairy Teaching Farm and also for crop research plots.
Last fall, operations at the Dairy Teaching Farm were discontinued as a response to state budget cuts. Dairy science teaching and research programs have been consolidated at Iowa State’s Ankeny Farm. Plans are underway to develop a new dairy facility using proceeds from the eventual sale of the Ankeny Farm, an action mandated by the state legislature.
