CNN broadcasts from campus will alter CyRide routes

Iowa’s caucus fever will reach Iowa State this week when CNN broadcasts two programs from campus, causing disruptions in CyRide service during the visit.
The bus system will undergo a few changes to accommodate the CNN bus. CyRide routes will be altered Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., which will affect bus stops at the Memorial Union, Forker Building, Lied Recreation Center and Linden Hall.
“We’re not changing the schedule, just where the buses are going,” said Karen Jamison, operations supervisor for CyRide.
She said steps are being taken to notify students about the route changes before Tuesday.
“We will be posting notices on all affected bus stops,” Jamison said.
Bus drivers on affected routes will be making announcements on Monday to inform students of the changes, Jamison said.
Two CNN political programs, “Inside Politics” and “Crossfire,” will be broadcast live as part of the cable network’s weeklong tour of Iowa. The broadcasts will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday north of the Memorial Union.
CNN is encouraging students and faculty of Iowa State to participate in Judy Woodruff’s “Inside Politics,” and “Crossfire” hosted by Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala.
“We would love to have student involvement, to talk to them and see what they’re thinking,” said Eileen McMenamin, a CNN producer.
“Students are very active in the political process and we want to get their perspectives.”
Hacker said the names of politically active students and faculty at Iowa State have been given to CNN for participation in the broadcast.
The CNN Election Express campaign bus will begin its weeklong tour by broadcasting Monday from the state capitol in Des Moines, McMenamin said. The bus will then broadcast from Ames Tuesday, from Iowa City Wednesday, and from Cedar Rapids Thursday. The tour will conclude Friday in Davenport.
The bus is outfitted with video editing equipment, an interview studio, satellite equipment and workspace for 15 CNN staff members.
Changes to CyRide routes will also be posted on the ISU Web site, said Annette Hacker, communications manager for university relations.
“We don’t want to inconvenience the students,” she said. “[But] it’s not every day that CNN comes to campus.”
