The ISU men’s and women’s track teams had their first road meet of the indoor season Saturday at Madison, Wis., with the Cyclone women capturing five first-place finishes.

Women’s head coach Dick Lee said he noticed a lot of good things from his squad.

“We had four individual and 4×400 winners at the meet,” Lee said. “It was a very good opener, actually better than expected. Everyone gave their best effort. We looked better than what we did in December.”

Although the men’s team didn’t capture any top honors, head coach Steve Lynn said he was still satisfied with his team’s performance.

“We did OK, just how we expected,” Lynn said. “Overall, we had a decent meet with a lot of personal records. There were no jump-up-and-downs and no disappointments.”

With the indoor track season getting under way, both coaches said it’s still too early in the season to really know the abilities of their teams.

“Everyone is hungry and they want to get better,” Lynn said. “We have a long season ahead of us but we have a chance to be a lot better. In March we look to run well.”

Lee also said he believes his team will be getting better as the season progresses.

“We have to continue to work hard and train to get better,” Lee said. “The competitive level will be higher in the other meets, but this gives us a starting point. For the most part I am very pleased, but we have to keep moving forward.”

Senior Sheba Clarke said she was happy with her win in the 60-meter dash but added she will need to improve throughout the season.

“We ran real well,” Clarke said. “We had a few girls finish first. We have a young team and they did well for the opener.

“I ran pretty well in Wisconsin. My time was not as fast as before, but time is much more important later. I want to improve on technique and get a better start.”

Tony Douglas, who finished second in the men’s long jump, said the Wisconsin meet will serve as a good stepping stone for the rest of the year.

“The long jump went real well,” Douglas said. “Hopefully I will maintain what I had and keep improving. My last two jumps were better, and I want to jump like that all the time.”

Both Clarke and Douglas said they have some accomplishments they want to achieve before the end of the season.

“I want to go out this season satisfied, have no regrets,” Clarke said. “If that means possibly [being an] All-American or going to nationals that would be great.”

“I want to continue to jump farther,” Douglas said. “I want to finish as high as possible and hopefully qualify for nationals.”
