January 29, 2004
The Ames Police Department and the Central Iowa Drug Task Force arrested two individuals Wednesday morning for involvement in extensive drug activity.
Just before noon, the drug task force arrested Andrew J. Shannon, 23, and his girlfriend, Mineu Vahid, 23, both of 2810 Grand Ave. #3, at their apartment, said Cmdr. Jim Robinson of the Ames Police Department.
According to a release from the Ames Police Department, one-half pound of crack cocaine and an unknown amount of psilocybin mushrooms were confiscated at the home. The confiscated drugs could be worth more than $30,000 in street value, according to police.
Robinson said he could not comment on how the warrant was acquired, but said information was received by the task force that Shannon was involved in drug activity.
Both Vahid and Shannon were cooperative in the arrest, Robinson said.
Shannon was charged with possession with the intent to deliver crack cocaine, a Class B felony, possession of psilocybin mushrooms, a serious misdemeanor and violation of the Iowa Drug Tax Stamp Act, a Class D felony.
Vahid was charged with possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine, a Class B felony, and violation of the Iowa Drug Tax Stamp Act, a Class D felony.
In 1998, Vahid was arrested and charged with fifth-degree theft, a simple misdemeanor, court documents said.
John Tinker, program coordinator for the Department of Public Safety at Iowa State, was unavailable for comment.
Shannon is being held at the Ames Police Department on $141,700 bond.
Vahid is also being held at the Ames Police Department on $139,750 bond.
Both could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of a Class B felony, and up to five years, in addition of a fine of between $750 and $7,500 if convicted of a Class D felony.
The Central Iowa Drug Task Force works with officers from the Ames Police Department, ISU Police, Story County Sheriff’s Office, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Boone Police Department and the Iowa State Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
