LETTER: Dean’s speech not worth ridicule
January 29, 2004
I think that the Daily showed poor taste on Tuesday by choosing to publish one of the many cartoons poking fun at Howard Dean’s so-called “I Have a Scream” post-caucus speech. If television media had not chosen to constantly bombard viewers with the sound bite, most people would have laughed it off and forgotten about it even sooner than they already have. New Hampshire voters did not seem to care, as Dean finished second to John Kerry in the Democratic primary on Tuesday evening.
I did not support Howard Dean at the caucuses.
But I am unhappy that someone who has reminded young adults of the importance of political awareness has been subjected to unending ridicule for something completely trivial and pointless.
Viewers and readers of news have a right to demand that journalists exercise good taste and judgment.
