Anne O’Neil made a total of six shots in Wednesday’s Big 12 contest against Texas Tech, out of 20 attempted.
But the sixth shot may have been the biggest of her collegiate career.
O’Neil hit a turn-around 15-foot jump shot with two-tenths of a second left to lift the Cyclones to a dramatic 64-63 Big 12 win over previously unbeaten Texas Tech in front of 7,430 fans at Hilton Coliseum.
The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for the Lady Raiders (15-1, 1-1 Big 12), who were ranked No. 1 in the latest ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 2 by the Associated Press.
“I think people are going to look at the score tomorrow in the paper six or seven times to make sure that Iowa State is on the left side, and that’s not supposed to be there. It’s going to go down as a huge victory for this program because we beat a No. 1 team,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I don’t want to say that it’s the best, because there have been a lot of good players here who have won a lot of great games. I do think it takes a little bit of a different light coming off a disappointing year last year. We’re fighting to get it going. And I think the timing of beating a No. 1 team was probably pretty dramatic.”
After Iowa State (8-5, 1-1 Big 12) trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, O’Neil made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Cyclones up 62-61 with 18.6 seconds remaining in the game.
Jia Perkins then hit a 10-foot jumper with eight seconds left to put Texas Tech ahead 63-62. After a timeout, O’Neil took the ball into the frontcourt, dribbled to her left and, with her back to the basket, turned around and fired the game-winning shot.
O’Neil said the last few seconds were a good time to be in the game.
“It was just great because I missed the free throw and Jia Perkins basically hit the jumper in my face,” O’Neil said. “I came into the timeout and I was just out of it and I was like, ‘All right, it’s eight seconds, see what you can do.’ By the time that I got at the other end of the floor, I felt that I was dribbling too much and I was like ‘Gosh, time is going to run out’ and I did a quick spin and shot it and saw it fall through the hoop. Lucky there was only point-two left.”
O’Neil led all scorers with 20 points and had a team-high seven rebounds. Katie Robinette came off the bench to play 23 minutes and provided a big spark for the Cyclones. She scored 18 points, 12 in the second half.
Texas Tech got things rolling in the first half as they jumped out to a 11-2 lead with 14:47 remaining.
Iowa State was cold offensively in the first part of the game as the Cyclones missed eight of their first nine shots.
O’Neil, who came into the contest as the Cyclones’ leading scorer with 13.4 points per game, started a 12-0 run to bring the crowd into a frenzy as Iowa State took its first lead 14-11 with 9:27 remaining in the half.
The run was sparked by Mary Fox and Megan Ronhovde hitting 3-pointers.
Both teams traded baskets as the Lady Raiders went into halftime ahead 28-26. Iowa State shot 40.7 percent from the floor in the first half.
Making free throws was the thing Texas Tech couldn’t do in the second half, as the Lady Raiders shot 13 of 22. Texas Tech was led in scoring by Casey Jackson with 13 points. Erin Grant and Perkins scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Texas Tech head coach Marsha Sharp said she knew O’Neil was going to take the last shot.
“We didn’t double on her and we probably should have,” Sharp said. “I thought Katie Robinette did a great job. We didn’t make our free throws and that’s a killer. Their crowd protected their home court.”
Iowa State will face its second ranked team this week as they travel to No. 3 Texas at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
