LETTER: Horses at Iowa State should have shelter

I grew up on a farm. In the summer we provided shade for our animals, and in winter we provided shelter. However, I don’t think some of the horses at Iowa State are receiving the same consideration.

While living at Frederiksen Court, I have noticed some horses did not have shade all day during the hot days this fall. Now this winter there are horses in a pasture with no shelter, with not even a thick grove of trees or a dry, snow-free spot to lie down.

I’m not a horse expert, so if horses do well without these things, please let me know.

I don’t want an expensive barn built, because there’s a horse barn just two blocks away.

My suggestion would be to keep the horses in the pasture during the day, and bring them in at night. Better yet, feed them in the barn at night, then they’ll want to go to the barn.

I’d even be willing to lead them back and forth every once in a while.
