Women dump Cleveland State, split tournament

Lisa Kriener had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Iowa State to a 75-59 victory over Indiana Saturday at the 2003 Paradise Jam women’s basketball tournament in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Cyclones captured third place in the tournament with the victory.
Anne O’Neil had 14 points for Iowa State, while Megan Ronhovde added 13 points and Lyndsey Medders chipped in 11.
Friday, Erin Gibson had 14 points to lead Virginia Tech as they beat Iowa State 67-57.
The Hokies (3-0) started the game with a 16-4 run to take control. The team never trailed in the entire game as they dominated the Cyclones (1-1).
The margin got to three points twice in the game, once in each half. The Hokies answered each Cyclone attack with one of their own.
The Cyclones got back into the game thanks to a 9-0 run after a tough offensive start.
Lyndsey Medders had 11 points in the first half in her first game as a Cyclone and led the Cyclones with 19 points.
The Cyclones opened the season with five players in double figures in a 73-51 win over Cleveland State Nov. 22.
Redshirt junior Anne O’Neil led the offense with 16 points. O’Neil also raked in a career-high 12 assists. O’Neil played some tough defense as she tallied three steals in the first half alone.
Cleveland native Mary Fox added 15 points to the Cyclone offense. Fox made a career-high five 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds in front of her home crowd.
Megan Ronhovde scored 12 points in the game, including two 3-pointers in less than two minutes. Lisa Kriener added 10 points to the ISU score.
The Cyclones had some help from the bench as well. Combined efforts from Brittany Wilkins and Tracy Paustian gave Iowa State 19 points. Paustian posted a career-high 11 rebounds for the Cyclones. Wilkins also added nine rebounds and a buzzer-breaking blocked shot.
The Cyclones sank 45.7 percent from the floor in the first half, which gave them a 13-point lead going into the locker room.
Early in the second half, a lay-up by O’Neil and four consecutive 3-pointers made for a 14-0 run by the Cyclones. Iowa State shot 50 percent from behind the arc in the second half.
Freshmen point guard Lyndsey Medders sat out after spraining her left ankle in practice.
