ISU wrestling coach Bobby Douglas can add a new entry to his resume — Iowa State beat Iowa 21-13 Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum, ending a 30-match losing streak to the Hawkeyes.

“I feel relief and enjoyment,” 165-pounder Nick Passolano said after he sealed the win in style, pinning Cole Pape in just 36 seconds.

Douglas had never beaten Iowa in his first 11 seasons at Iowa State. The last ISU win in the series came on Jan. 11, 1987.

“It feels great for me,” Douglas said. “[But] I hope this doesn’t make the season for us.”

Although Passolano had Iowa State’s only bonus-points win, he said he wouldn’t take all of the credit for upsetting the Hawkeyes, who entered the dual meet ranked third nationally by InterMat.

“We’ve got guys in our lineup who wrestled all seven minutes — they wrestled their hearts out,” Passolano said. “I just happened to be the one at the end who won. You have to give credit to everyone on the wrestling team.

“Our coaching staff, our alumni, our fan support; they’ve stuck with us through the 30 [match losing] streak, and that takes a lot for them to do,” he said.

Passolano’s pin in the final match sparked a roar of applause that rang through the crowd of 5,149, many of whom made the trip from Iowa City hoping to see the Hawkeyes extend their streak to 31.

But Iowa State rallied from a 13-3 intermission deficit, winning the last five weights.

Passolano’s excitement over Iowa State’s victory was clearly visible after his match, as the 165-pounder circled the mat with his fists in the air jumping in celebration of the long-awaited win.

“I can’t even explain how I feel right now,” 184-pounder Kurt Backes said. “It’s a big meet — Iowa, Iowa State.

“I’m just really happy to be able to give my coach this opportunity to end the streak. We thought if everybody can do what they’re supposed to do — no upsets, no pins — we would come out victoriously.”
