Art Mart to feature ISU-made items
December 3, 2003
Colorful blown glass, original prints, pottery and jewelry will be on sale at the Art Mart beginning Wednesday morning.
Letitia Kenemer, arts program adviser for the Memorial Union, said the Art Mart has been well-attended for the few years it has been put on.
Groups participating in the Art Mart this year include the Gaffers’ Guild, the ISU glass blowing club on campus, and the University Print Society. Kenemer said she anticipates the crowd will be bigger than usual because of the items the groups will bring to the sale.
Steve Martin, faculty adviser for the Gaffers’ Guild and professor in materials science and engineering, said the group will offer a variety of glass pieces.
Included in the pieces will be sophisticated work from more experienced glass blowers, and very few pieces will be priced more than $30, Martin said. Decorative, not utilitarian, pieces will make up the majority of pieces, he said.
Examples of glass blown objects that will be on sale are Christmas ornaments, glass snowmen, fish and flowers, he said. Plates, bowls, cups, paperweights and vases will also be sold, Martin said.
The Art Mart serves as the primary fund raiser for the club, he said. “[The Gaffers’ Guild is] trying to break even.”
Along with the glass pieces, pottery, handmade books and jewelry will be sold, Kenemer said. Pottery is usually the largest selling item, she said.
Items are priced from 25 cents to about $80, but most items will fall between the $5 to $20 range, she said.
The Holiday Art Mart begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. in the Northwest Study Lounge in the Memorial Union.
