LETTER: Adequate balance is found in lectures
December 1, 2003
Jacob Parr, in his Nov. 18 letter, “Lectures are lacking balance of views,” criticized the lecture series here at Iowa State, inferring a liberal bias. Apparently, Mr. Parr missed the Heritage Foundation scholar John Hulsman, who gave a conservative perspective about U.S. foreign policy for the World Affairs series.
However, Mr. Parr will still be able to hear Republican Congressman Steve King’s remarks on his recent tour of Iraq, NRA President Kayne Robinson’s view on the Bill of Rights, and retired General Eugene E. Habiger speak from his perspective as former commander in chief of the U.S. Strategic Command.
We would like all readers to know that committee members work hard to provide a wide variety of speakers to our campus community, supporting student organization requests and collaborating with university departments and organizations to bring more then 100 speakers each year.
These speakers cover the spectrum from Comedy Central’s Mo Rocca to Shipping News author Annie Proulx, and musician Henry Rollins to Nobel Laureate Norman Borlaug.
Despite rising speaker fees, busy speaker schedules and sometimes difficult travel arrangements, the array of speakers on campus is truly amazing.
Finally, to all students: Please don’t hesitate to contact the Lectures Program Office and the Committee on Lectures with any suggestions you may have for speakers.
