LETTER: Lowering standards reduces credibility
December 3, 2003
I agree with Alex Farley, regarding his Dec. 2 letter, “Applying standards to athletes is crucial.” Athletes who play at a large university have to understand they are going to be in the limelight and therefore are representing the whole university both during and after the season. Jackson Vroman is an adult and knew the consequences of his actions — he should have to take the punishment just like any benchwarmer would have to.
Larry Eustachy was let go for violating behavior agreements in his contract — does Vroman’s contract say that being arrested for illegal drugs is ok and he can still play?
I hope everyone realizes that no matter how good Iowa State looks winning a couple of basketball games, we still look pretty bad lowering our standards for people who can score more baskets.
