LETTER: Athletes give back to community, too
December 2, 2003
How much joy does the Iowa State Daily find in always writing about the negatives in regard to ISU athletics?
As a former student-athlete, it is rather disheartening to always open up the paper and see negative headlines, along with mentioning every possible negative event that can be found at all related to ISU athletics. I understand it is your job to cover the news, and the negatives are a part of it, but how about a little optimism and effort to finding or covering the positives?
What about the wonderful things student athletes do over the course of the year to give back to the community? Does the Daily ever ask questions or find out about these volunteer acts and programs? Not exactly.
ISU student-athletes have volunteered their time for some great causes throughout the school year so far, and this will continue. Members of many teams volunteered at the Des Moines Race for the Cure early this fall as the group in charge of handling finish-line activities.
Student-athletes have gone to local schools to speak about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, met with adults with disabilities, helped in a United Way fund raiser and headed to schools to discuss a wide range of topics with the youths of Central Iowa. Student-athletes have also sold temporary tattoos at a football game to raise funds for the Special Olympics of Iowa, in addition to making appearances at youth groups and schools for assemblies and gatherings.
As one can see, there are a lot of positive things being done by ISU student-athletes, and these should not be neglected by the Daily.
