LETTER: Atheist organization ignored in article
December 4, 2003
This letter is in response to Dana Schmidt’s Dec. 2 article, “Keeping the faith on campus.”
The Daily rightly notes that students who leave their hometowns have many places to practice their faith at Iowa State. However, the Daily fails to mention one place for all of those people who do not want to practice any faith at all: The ISU Atheist & Agnostic Society.
After graduating high school, I looked forward to having great discussions with intelligent people in a more conducive environment. I looked forward to objective conversations with people, whose faith hadn’t corrupted their minds. But upon coming to Iowa State, I was less than satisfied with what I found.
Finally, I contacted Hector Avalos, a Harvard biblical scholar and associate professor of religious studies here at Iowa State. He helped me re-start the ISU Atheist & Agnostic Society.
At AAS, we have created both an educational and support group. People who associate themselves with religions have a large number of support groups. They can go to any of the massive churches on Lincoln Way, or they can go sing with any number of Christian groups. The only real secular support group that exists is the AAS.
