Wilkins has career night in final game of Classic
December 15, 2003
It was a career night for sophomore Brittany Wilkins Saturday. Wilkins came off the bench and recorded a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds to lift Iowa State to a 79-53 win over Long Island in the championship game of the Cyclone Classic at Hilton Coliseum.
Wilkins, junior Tracy Paustian, and senior Erica Junod, along with Long Island’s Kelli Sawyer, Utah Valley State’s Liz Kelly, and Texas Southern’s Monica Okolo were named to the all-tournament team. Junod also received Most Valuable Player honors.
Paustian had six offensive rebounds to go along with 10 rebounds and tallied seven points for the Cyclones.
ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said he was pleased with the performances of Wilkins, Paustian and Junod.
“Obviously, when you have two kids who make an all-tournament team who are historically role players, that’s a great thing,” Fennelly said. “Number one, they’re recognized. Number two, it shows how [they] can impact the success of this team.
“I thought Tracy Paustian was great both nights and obviously Brit had a huge night tonight. And Erica Junod, with what she’s been through, to be MVP, it’s really amazing and a neat thing to see. I’m very proud of all of them.”
Saturday’s game was a huge contrast for Wilkins after going 0-for-6 shooting and grabbing only four rebounds Friday against Texas Southern.
“I need to come out stronger every night and I didn’t do that Friday night,” Wilkins said. “I just need to improve my effort, and it doesn’t take a lot of skill to rebound the ball. Going out there and making the hustle plays and stuff, that was my goal.”
Iowa State jumped to a 21-11 lead with 8:56 remaining in the first half on a 3-pointer by Lyndsey Medders. The Cyclones led 35-22 going into halftime.
The Cyclones (5-3) started the second half with a 7-0 run as Wilkins scored four points in the short spurt. Mary Fox’s 3-pointer with 5:13 left in the second half put the Cyclones up 71-44 for their biggest lead of the game.
Anne O’Neil scored 14 points and had a game-high eight assists, while Medders came off the bench to add 10 points. Long Island was led by Erin Pinchbeck with 15 points.
Iowa State outrebounded Long Island 58-32 and shot 43 percent from the floor.
Fennelly said he was pleased with the whole team’s performance in both games.
“We had eight kids who contributed in two nights. That’s what we need to be able to do,” Fennelly said. “The challenge for us is to be a little bit more consistent. It’s weird. Brittany [Wilkins] was 0-for-6 [Friday] and Lisa [Kriener] was 0-for-6 [Saturday]. That can’t happen against a Washington or a Big 12 team. Overall, I thought we played well for two nights. And that was a good thing.”
The Cyclones will be back in action Sunday when they host Washington at 3 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
