Cyclones sweep Minnesota State-Mankato
December 8, 2003
It was one of those weekends when the ISU men’s hockey team spent a majority of the time in its offensive zone shooting the puck.
The Cyclones took a total of 102 shots and went on to sweep American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II foe Minnesota State-Mankato 6-1 on Saturday and 7-4 on Friday at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
Iowa State, ranked No. 10 in the ACHA, is now 15-10-2 overall.
“The guys get excited to get a sweep at home. They were clicking real good,” ISU head coach Alan Murdoch said. “We played well on Friday night, and we played better [on Saturday]. [Our] defense played real well, and I think we’ve got quickness, puck-handling and shooting. I give Minnesota State credit. They worked real hard, didn’t give up and didn’t quit.”
In Saturday’s contest, Iowa State didn’t waste time getting on the scoreboard. Junior forward Scott Hagen’s wrister found the back of the net for his 15th goal of the season with 18:44 remaining in the first period. Iowa State added three more goals in the period from Travis Fast, Zach Peterson and Drew Schade, who tallied the first goal of his varsity career.
With 13:58 left in the second period, senior forward Chris Linden deflected a Nick Tuma shot into the net to push the Cyclones’ lead to 5-0. Peterson later scored his second goal of the game as he slapped a shot past Mavericks goalie Brian DuBois.
Peterson said his linemates provided some great passes for his two goals and the team was doing a lot in the offensive zone.
“They gave me a lot of opportunities, and I was lucky to capitalize on them,” Peterson said. “In practice a lot, we’ve been working on getting a lot of shots. We’ve been trying to focus on scoring, putting the puck in the net.”
Minnesota State-Mankato’s Eric Boelter scored with 10:38 left in the third period for the Mavericks’ only goal of the game. Fast scored with 3:46 left on assists from juniors Tim O’Shea and Travis Denzel.
Fast said the team’s preparation during the week helped assure a winning record the first half of the season.
“We’re seeing the ice really well now and starting to click,” Fast said. “We’re working hard in the weight room, slide boards and working hard in practice.”
ISU senior goalie Nolan Thompson, who started in the Cyclones 3-1 win over Oklahoma on Nov. 29, made 15 saves in the game. It was his second consecutive win.
In Friday’s win, Fast scored two goals and Denzel, Brad Taylor, Jason Brown and Rob Tauer had one apiece.
Murdoch said he was pleased with the team’s scoring throughout the weekend.
“We had five different lines score over the two games,” Murdoch said. “The Hagen-Fast-Denzel unit is playing real well. I dressed the fifth unit on Saturday and they got a couple of goals and we feel really good about it.”
Iowa State will close out the fall semester schedule on Friday and Saturday by hosting Minnesota with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
