EDITORIAL: Gyroman still has our vote

Editorial Board

If you’re still logy from a Thanksgiving turkey overdose, wake up — it’s time to get out to the polls and vote again in the City Council elections today.

We’re still standing behind the Gyroman. Matthew Goodman lost by only 22 votes in the Nov. 4 general election to Mary Ann Lundy, making this election necessary. But Goodman is still the candidate who can best represent the ISU community on City Council.

As the owner and manager of the Welch Avenue gyro stand, Goodman has spoken to more ISU students than some professors and most community members have. His entrepreneurial spirit and love for the community have been evident throughout the years, and it seems apt that Goodman should represent the community on City Council.

Goodman realizes effective communication between students and the Ames community isn’t just a tired catchphrase used by the Council candidates this year. He’s proposed a three-pronged approach that includes improving communication between neighborhoods and neighborhood groups.

Goodman’s innovative proposal to add an ex officio City Council member to the Government of the Student Body is a refreshing idea, and a true example of finding a meaningful way to solve the perpetual “lack of communication” issue.

While attending Iowa State, Goodman represented students on GSB, the Memorial Union Board of Directors and the Student Union Board. He currently serves on the Campustown Action Committee and the Wheatsfield Grocery Board of Directors.

Goodman’s opponent, Mary Ann Lundy, is a longtime Ames resident and ISU professor with an impressive track record in public service as well. Lundy also wants to open channels of dialogue between students and other Ames citizens.

However, Goodman is a better fit for the Ames City Council at this time. We see Goodman as one of our own, a candidate who understands how students feel — and it goes way beyond taking orders of “no onions” and “extra hot sauce” on late-night gyro snacks.

Help make an effective change in our community today. Get out and vote for Matthew Goodman for the at-large seat on Ames City Council.
