Terry’s injury frightens McCarney, ISU
December 1, 2003
COLUMBIA, Mo. — ISU junior quarterback Waye Terry lost sensation in his arms and legs after a third-quarter hit Saturday but later regained all feeling, ISU head coach Dan McCarney said.
“He’s got his feeling back in his hands and his feet,” McCarney said. “That’s the best news coming out of today.”
Terry was likely to spend Saturday night at University Hospital overnight for further testing, McCarney said.
Iowa State’s starter was hurt after fumbling the snap on a fourth-and-1 play late in Saturday’s third quarter, with the Cyclones trailing 24-7. In the scramble for the ball, which Missouri’s Michael Harden eventually recovered, Terry went down in a pile and was hit hard in the head by defensive back Jason Simpson’s shoulder.
Terry lay on the field for several minutes as medical personnel treated and eventually decided to take him off the field on a stretcher while still in uniform.
Freshman Austin Flynn replaced Terry as Iowa State lost 45-7.
Terry completed 8 of 13 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and ran 11 times for 24 yards. This is his second season at Iowa State after redshirting in 2002.
