Hawks sink after eight first-place finishes from ISU swimmers
December 8, 2003
With no divers, Iowa faced a tough task to beat Iowa State on the road Saturday. After the Cyclones’ Kim Rogers won an upset in the 200 butterfly, the Hawkeyes were finished.
Iowa State had eight first-place finishes en route to a 170-124 victory.
With the victory, the Cyclones exacted some revenge — having placed two spots behind the Hawkeyes in the Minnesota Invitational Nov. 21-23 — and also have bragging rights for the year.
“It was a huge win for us,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We knew we were going to win some races, and we knew they were going to win some races. The key would be the toss-up races, and we won the majority of those.”
One of those close races was the 200 butterfly. Sophomore Kim Rogers won the event with a time of 2:07.15, earning nine points for the Cyclones. Rogers’ time was only three-tenths of a second ahead of second-place finisher Andrea Hemphill of Iowa.
“That was a huge momentum shift for us,” Sorenson said. “After that, our team responded very well, and went on to have a great meet.”
Senior Petra Plaminkova was the Cyclone standout for the meet. Plaminkova won three events and was also a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team along with teammates Kim Schmugge, Sam Dyshaw and Brita Benson.
Plaminkova had first place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.01), the 200 breaststroke (2:19.07) and the 200 individual medley (2:07.06).
Also competing strongly were Dyshaw, Benson and Lauren Breunig. Dyshaw came in second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.31 and took first in the 100 butterfly, recording a time of 56.89.
Benson took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.06 and Breunig won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.64.
For the divers, it was a chance to break personal bests, as Iowa did not bring any divers to the competition.
“Two of the Iowa divers are redshirt freshmen, while the third diver was too sick to compete,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said.
A lack of opposition didn’t stop senior diver Linda Wagner from having a big day. Wagner took first place in both the 1- and 3-meter dive competitions scoring 297.15 and 297.30, respectively.
Sophomore Hillary Nichols placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 290.31 and Katie Herman scored 252.30 en route to a second-place finish in the 3-meter competition.
The Cyclones will travel to Cedar Falls to take on Northern Iowa Friday at 6 p.m.
