Eight quarters, no change
November 10, 2003
128 minutes.
That’s how long it’s been since the last time the ISU football team put points on the board.
The Cyclones were shut out for the second straight game Saturday as they went down 45-0 to Kansas State. Iowa State has not scored since the halfway point of the fourth quarter against Texas Oct. 18.
“It’s very frustrating,” said ISU quarterback Austin Flynn. “We’ve got to — some way, somehow — find a way to get into the end zone.”
Flynn finished with 4 of 9 passing for 21 yards and an interception, but only played in the second half, with junior quarterback Waye Terry getting the nod to start the game. This marks the third straight week that head coach Dan McCarney has started a different quarterback.
“I don’t like playing this quarterback carousel thing,” McCarney said. “It’s just [about] inconsistency and we’ve seen that all year long at the quarterback spot. We see some good things, we see potential, but we’ve just got to make more plays and good decisions.”
Terry completed 7 of 20 passes for 80 yards with two interceptions and led the Cyclones down the field for what turned out to be their only chance at scoring — a missed 47 yard field goal by Tony Yelk midway through the first quarter.
Kansas State then drove 70 yards on the following possession and scored on a 23-yard run by junior tailback Darren Sproles, making it 7-0 Wildcats.
After a three-and-out by the Cyclones, Kansas State again found the end zone on a nine yard touchdown pass from Ell Roberson to Thomas Hill with 14:55 remaining in the first half.
The ISU defense held the Wildcats scoreless for the rest of the quarter and went into halftime down by what seemed to be a manageable deficit of 14 points.
“We had a good [first half],” McCarney said. “We moved the ball at times and, defensively, we gave up a couple of touchdowns, but we didn’t feel like we were getting overwhelmed.”
The wind was quickly taken out of the Cyclones’ sails as Sproles ran for a 70-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half.
“If you give him just a little bit of daylight, he’s going to do what he did in that first play of the second half,” McCarney said. “He’s just a sensational player. He’s tough, he’s physical, he has good hands, he’ll make you miss and he looks like he has almost world-class speed.”
Sproles finished the day with a career-best 201 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
“I haven’t played better in my career. I came out in the second half and I was in the zone,” Sproles said.
The final scoring of the game came on a late fourth quarter run by Kansas State’s backup quarterback Dylan Meier.
With Saturday’s loss the Cyclones fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12. Iowa State was out-gained 503 yards to 140 by the Wildcats (8-3, 4-2).
“It was complete domination by Kansas State in the second half,” McCarney said.
“Their defense is ranked 11th in the country and they played like it today.”
McCarney knows that the Wildcat defense wasn’t the only thing that kept his team from scoring for the second straight game.
“Our offense couldn’t consistently put anything together,” McCarney said. “Neither of our quarterbacks were very effective. It’s not just one guy, it’s missed blocks here, dropped passes there. We’ve just got to be more consistent overall, that’s pretty obvious.”
On a brighter note, Cyclone wideout Lane Danielsen caught his 151st pass, a new ISU record. Danielsen passed Tracy Henderson’s mark of 150 and finished the game with 154 career receptions.
“It means a lot to me, it’s something I’ve been working for my whole career here at Iowa State,” Danielsen said.
Danielsen and the rest of the Cyclone seniors will be playing in Jack Trice Stadium for the last time next Saturday when the Colorado Buffaloes come to town. McCarney knows if he wants his seniors to have a memorable game it’ll be back to the drawing board once again this week.
“We’ve got a lot of work and evaluating to do this week,” McCarney said. “We want to win our last game at home for our seniors, there’s no doubt about it.”
