Cyclones hot from the field in high-scoring exhibition
November 18, 2003
Will Blalock and Curtis Stinson drove the Cyclone bus Monday night as they downed Global Sports 91-83 in Iowa State’s second and final exhibition game.
Next stop — the regular season.
The two freshman guards led the Cyclones in scoring with 19 points each on a combined 16-of-28 shooting, with Blalock hitting four 3-pointers, including a 60-footer at the first-half buzzer.
“I told Will afterwards, ‘You need to understand something son, your range is two, four, or 50 feet,'” head coach Wayne Morgan said. “That was some shot at halftime.”
Morgan said Blalock and Stinson complement each other almost perfectly.
“Will has really blazing speed and side-to-side action,” Morgan said. “Curtis is extremely strong, extremely under control. He’s like a bulldog — he gets ahold of you and he isn’t letting go.”
Senior guard Jake Sullivan got on track after struggling against the L.A. Stars two weeks ago, shooting 6-for-9 from the field for 15 points. Sullivan said the other guards were a big part of his night.
“Curtis and Will make my play real easy out there, so I just stand and hit the jump shots, grab a few rebounds and make a few assists,” Sullivan said.
A total of five Cyclones scored in double figures with Marcus Jefferson and Jared Homan scoring 12 and 14 points, respectively.
After gaining a 10-7 lead, the Cyclones never trailed and opened up a few 20-plus point leads, only to have Global Sports claw back to within single digits numerous times in the second half.
“I thought Global Sports was a good opponent,” Morgan said. “I thought that in the second half, our defense was not as stellar as it needs to be and obviously we have a lot of work to do there.”
Jason Blair led Global Sports with 16 points, with Ramille Curry chipping in 13.
Junior forward Damion Staple played through an injury to score eight points, with freshman center Reggie George sitting out the game in street clothes. Both players were listed as day-to-day.
