Former football player arrested after chase
November 18, 2003
A former ISU football player was arrested Monday afternoon after a high-speed pursuit that began in Ames and ended on Interstate 35.
Reggie Moorer, of West Des Moines, has been charged with numerous traffic violations including excessive speed, improper passing and eluding police, and possession of drug paraphernalia, said Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m. when an Ames police officer noticed a missing license plate on Moorer’s 1991 brown Chevy Caprice, Robinson said. The officer also found Moorer was without a valid driver’s license and proceeded to make a traffic stop on Southeast 16th Street.
The chase began southbound on Southeast 16th Street and continued eastbound on Highway 30.
Robinson said the Iowa Highway Patrol was called to assist three Ames Police Department cars as Moorer exited Highway 30 and began traveling south on Interstate 35.
Speeds exceeded 100 mph, Robinson said.
The chase was called off due to poor weather conditions just before Moorer began to exit the interstate at the Elkhart exit, Robinson said.
“He was unable to negotiate the exit and lost control of the vehicle,” Robinson said.
Moorer crashed his car, resulting in a total loss, and began running on foot, Robinson said.
He said officers began a short foot pursuit before taking Moorer into custody. Moorer is being held overnight at the Ames Police Department.
Moorer did not sustain any injuries, Robinson said.
Robinson said several issues are taken into consideration before beginning a pursuit including amount of traffic, weather and city zoning.
According to Iowa court records, Moorer pleaded guilty to felony charges in 1999 and 2002. He was also arrested on a warrant of serious misdemeanor. Moorer was also charged with a simple misdemeanor in 2000. All charges were filed in Story County.
Moorer came to Iowa State in 1995 and was a wide receiver for the football team for the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
