LETTER: It’s time for change in football program
November 17, 2003
I believe it’s time for change. I think ISU football coach Dan McCarney has taken the football program as far as he can. As appreciative as we all should be of his efforts and dedication to this university and football program, the time has come to bring in someone who can bring more consistent success.
In my opinion, it took far too long to get the team to a bowl game, compared to other football programs (Oklahoma, Washington State, Northern Illinois and others). Out of the three bowl games, we’ve only had one win.
The team doesn’t produce consistent performances, and now we’ve fallen back to below average.
I know the Big 12 is one of the toughest, if not the toughest conference, but why have a football team if we can’t produce wins? Some people will say, “just to bring money to the athletic department.” That can’t possibly be enough — our university deserves better.
On a side note, you can usually tell how good teams are by the non-conference schedule (of course Kansas State is an exception). We should have a team that plays against tougher opponents, such as Wisconsin, California, Air Force, Clemson and Arizona.
Why is it Iowa State and Wisconsin haven’t played? Coach McCarney was a pupil of Coach Barry Alvarez — that would seem to be a reasonable game to schedule.
It’s time to bring in someone who knows how to win football games.
