Contributions from younger players highlight soccer season

Finishing the season with a 5-10-4 overall record and 2-6-2 in Big 12 play, head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said while the team is disappointed, she is looking at how the team grew throughout the season.
“Obviously the record and the numbers of wins versus the number of losses and ties is a disappointment because we set a standard that we wanted more for our team — and obviously to reach the post season — and that didn’t happen,” said Hornbacher, who completed her second season as coach of the Cyclones.
“It’s important that I look at the growth of individual players [and] the team and realize that the core of our team is very young.”
The Cyclones will lose seniors Beth Chapman, Lindsay Lees and Arlene Samuel. Chapman started all 19 games in goal and posted three shutouts. As defenders, Lees took two shots for the team and Samuel had a goal and an assist for the Cyclones.
Sophomore forward Kristina Baumann said the team is disappointed with the season record.
“We worked hard all season,” Baumann said. “There’s always next season, and we’re going to work hard in the off-season.”
Hornbacher said her players set high expectations throughout the season.
“It shows about the character of the team. It’s not just good enough to come out and play. They come out to play to win,” Hornbacher said. “The players have the expectation of bringing our program to a level that is very competitive in the Big 12.”
One of the biggest wins of the season came on Oct. 12 against then-ranked Oklahoma State at home. The Cyclones came out with a 3-1 win.
“Oklahoma State was a fantastic mark for our program, coming back from losing to against Kansas on Friday night when we played extremely well,” Hornbacher said.
Hornbacher said the team played a lot better against all of the Big 12 teams.
“When I look back at how we competed against some of these teams that we played this year versus the way we played against them last year, I know that it’s a dramatic improvement,” Hornbacher said.
Redshirt freshman forward Kate Kirwan finished the season leading the Cyclones in scoring with a team-high eight goals and 21 points.
Hornbacher credited players stepping up and playing critical roles.
“Laura Schweer came in from the off-season training before this season and gave us great contributions this year,” Hornbacher said. “The freshmen came in, really didn’t know what to expect and some of them started every game and played a key contribution and developed through out the season.”
Baumann agreed with Hornbacher.
“Kate Kirwin, Jess Villhauer, Christine Beatty and Erin McDowell all stepped up in play,” Baumann said.
