LETTER: Student tailgating should move back
November 5, 2003
All right, enough is enough! I have sat quietly the entire semester listening to all the debates and politics concerning students being forced to park and tailgate in designated lots farther from the stadium. The athletic department’s excuse for all of this: “alcohol-related behavior,” the National Cyclone Club and “security.” Students have suddenly been made scapegoats!
It should be no secret that a lot of the funding for these projects comes from the always safety-conscious National Cyclone Club! Yes, the same National Cyclone Club that sips their cocktails and dips their carrots in ranch dressing in what used to be the “general public” parking area. I can guarantee the members of the club who are parked there paid a bit more than $7 a game to park in this distinguished area!
I think when GSB originally brought the idea of cutting student funding of athletics to the table they were on the right track. I am a bit baffled at why this action is no longer being pursued. Maybe our esteemed Speaker of the Senate Mr. Tony Luken is showing up late for too many meetings because he is too enthralled in his pinball game — or are GSB and the athletic department phasing out this issue cooperatively? I’m sure with all the uproar of late, both parties would just as soon the problem go away.
Money to fund athletic activities was the sole reason this whole mess has come to surface. This is perfect evidence that “money talks”! I think our GSB officers should continue to fight for a return of the general public parking areas to their original position.
