Restaurants cited after serving minors alcohol
November 5, 2003
The Ames Police Department cited three Ames establishments Saturday during a routine alcohol compliance test.
La Fuente, 217 S. Duff Ave., Whiskey River, 132 Main St., and Cafe Lovish, 2512 Lincoln Way, were cited for serving alcohol to a minor, said Cmdr. Jim Robinson of the Ames Police Department.
Robinson said 11 Ames establishments that serve alcohol were randomly selected for inspection Saturday. Of those, a minor assisting the Ames Police Department was able to enter and was served alcohol at three locations.
“We would prefer 100 percent compliance, of course,” Robinson said.
He said during such a test, a law enforcement officer is within the vicinity of the minor and the minor is sometimes accompanied by friends.
A $667 fine is given to the person who served or sold the alcohol to the minor, Robinson said.
A new employee at Cafe Lovish was working the day the test ran.
“I’ll be tougher on them, that’s for sure,” said Lovish Bederazack, Cafe Lovish owner.
Bederazack said employees are instructed to check carefully for identification when serving alcohol and are asked to sign a document indicating they will do so. “We’re aware [of minors] now more than ever,” he said.
The Ames Police also ran compliance checks at Diamond Dave’s Restaurant, North Grand Mall, Corner Pocket, 125 Main St., The Break, 115 Main St., Paddy’s Irish Pub, 124 Welch Ave., Mickey’s Irish Pub,109 Welch Ave., Sips, 124 Welch Ave., People’s Bar and Grill, 2430 Lincoln Way, and Cafe Escape, 2402 Lincoln Way.
