LETTER: Graduate school is near impossibility
November 6, 2003
Millions of dollars are cut yearly from educations. Thousands of scholarships are not offered anymore. Hundreds and thousands of students cannot afford graduate school. Assistantships are hardly offered, and we are still cutting money from education.
What made the United States the most powerful and developed country on the world? What makes the future brighter and civilized? What makes technology run? Education.
If you can’t afford to “buy” education, it seems you don’t deserve it. What about my dreams? I dreamed all my life of going to graduate school. I always wanted to continue my education. I wish I could buy my education from Wal-Mart — they might put it on sale!
Current graduate students are future professors. They are the future power that will lead education and lead the development of this earth. Many talented students don’t even realize their talents, and they don’t have enough to pay for their graduate study.
Research has been cut. Classes are suffering from this budget cut. We have fewer quality teachers and lower-quality services. With hardly any grants, Iowa State is still trying to become the best. How on earth will Iowa State be the best if we are stealing money from education?
