LETTER: Political agenda not supporting students
November 3, 2003
Think all “student” candidates are pro-student? Think again.
Not only has fourth ward “student” candidate Matt Denner publicly sided with the current council on the matter of the paternalistic drink specials ban, he has taken his support one step further in arguing for even more restrictive measures.
Taken with the rest of Denner’s platform, his agenda is clear — despite what he may claim, “student” concerns are secondary to using the position to put forth his far-left Green Party agenda.
With his established far-leftist credentials as president of the Campus Greens and expressed support for a stricter ban on drink specials, one is left to ask — what exactly won’t Denner oppose regulating further?
Rarely has a City Council taken such an affinity to restricting the ordinary citizen as the Ames City Council has, and the last thing needed is a candidate whose political agenda is more regulation and restriction.
Why should students throw their support behind someone whose support for student issues could be described as half-hearted at best? If students truly wish to have their issues heard, they would be far better served by a candidate who supports them on all the issues — not just ones that fit into their political agendas.
