Cyclone volleyball team travels to face Tigers without Chapman
November 19, 2003
There’s plenty of incentive for Iowa State to defeat Missouri in Wednesday’s volleyball match.
First, the Tigers beat the Cyclones earlier this season, in three games Oct. 4 at Hilton Coliseum.
Second, the Cyclones need to win in Columbia, Mo., to have a chance to climb out of the cellar in the Big 12 standings.
It won’t be easy. Iowa State will miss senior Lindsey Chapman for the second straight game, after she was suspended indefinitely for an unspecified team rules violation.
Iowa State is currently tied for 10th place in the standings with Texas Tech.
The Cyclones lost a 3-0 match Saturday night at home against Kansas, while the Red Raiders lost 3-2 to Texas A&M. Both teams will take 3-14 conference marks into their respective matches. Tech’s next match is this Saturday against Kansas State.
Missouri is currently 10-7 in the Big 12 and 17-9 overall. Missouri broke a five-match skid Saturday with a 3-2 win over Oklahoma.
“Missouri has a great offense,” said head coach Linda Crum. “We have to get them out of their system.”
In the Big 12, the Tigers are currently fifth in hitting percentage with a .235 average, fourth in assists with an average of 14.7 per game and third in blocks with a 2.6 average.
“We will need to spread our offense,” Crum said. “Their middles are 6-4 and 6-2, and we will need to stop them from putting up double and triple blocks.”
The Missouri duo of Shen Danru and Lindsey Hunter recently had back-to-back double-doubles.
Iowa State will have to get back its game mentality, which has been inconsistent at times this season.
“We need to compete at the same level we did in the third game Saturday night against Kansas,” said sophomore Ashlie McWee.
“We need to pick up our serving, passing and defense. If we do that, then we will be successful.”
Following Wednesday’s match, the Cyclones will get a week off until their final home match of the season against Oklahoma. That match will be Nov. 26 with a 7 p.m. start in Hilton Coliseum. Four seniors — Renae Pruess, Michelle Gannon, Dana Koziol and Chapman — will be honored during the evening.
Also Tuesday, the ISU athletic department announced that six ISU volleyball players earned academic all-conference recognition.
Chapman, Gannon, Koziol, Pruess and Nicole Lorenzen were named to the first team, while Christine Smeele was a second-team selection.
Koziol and Pruess both earned academic all-conference recognition for the third-straight season, while Smeele and Chapman earned honors for the second time.
