Iowa State splits dual swim meet

The ISU swimming and diving team came out with one win and one loss in a meet against Southern Illinois and Illinois Saturday.

The Cyclones dominated the meet against Southern Illinois, winning 209-91, and lost to the Illini 185-115.

“We raced very well against both Illinois and Southern Illinois,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Illinois had the home-field advantage, and that always helps in close races. They also had better turns than we did, and that was the difference.”

Among the Cyclones who performed well was senior Kim Schmugge, who placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.99.

Schmugge, with teammates Petra Plaminkova, Brita Benson and freshman Lauren Breunig, finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.10. Breunig also finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:53.59 and 52.92.

“It would have been nice to win both meets,” Schmugge said. “It was hard to lose the second one, but we just have to work on the little things, like starts and turns, to get better as a team.”

While the swimmers had some great finishes, the divers dominated the 1-meter diving competition taking the top three places.

Junior Katie Herman placed first in the competition with a score of 224.05. Following Herman were teammates senior Linda Wagner and sophomore Hillary Nichols with scores of 221.85 and 218.50.

Wagner also placed first in the 3-meter competition with a score of 227.05 and was joined in the top three by teammate Gail Olson. Olson placed third in the competition with a score of 216.55.

The Cyclones will have a few weeks off until their next meet, the three day invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., hosted by Minnesota. At the invitational last year, Iowa State scored 294.5 points and finished sixth.
