LETTER: Tailgating solution will come in time
October 21, 2003
I want to clear up some issues regarding yesterday’s article concerning the tailgating issue. First and foremost, removing my name from the resolution does not dissolve it.
While I was the primary author, there were 11 other senators who believed as I did that a message needed to be sent. I believe that once the issue has been deliberated upon as it has, the senate will back down from this proposed $11 cut in fees and pursue other means.
I think the issue of the massive reduction in the fees to the athletic department is dead. I do not believe it has the support of the senate because of the real progress that has been made in the negotiations with the athletic department by many senators, including Andrew Tugan, Dan Christenson, Jason Stonerook and Vice Speaker William Rock.
While the issue of the decrease in effect has passed, there is a small number of senators who believe the abuse of the students and their fees on this issue left an impression that cannot be removed so easily. They wanted to think long and hard about this. While I am not one of those senators, I do see their very legitimate point.
Senators, other students and I are all working very hard to see this issue come to a resolution both sides can agree on. Both students and the administration need to realize this is a process and that nothing can happen overnight.
