LETTER: Dean Corps blends politics and service
October 29, 2003
Community service and political action became one this weekend in Ames. Twenty-six volunteers working for the Howard Dean For America Campaign, from both Iowa State and the Ames community, joined forces to collect clothes that were then donated to local shelters.
This is the fourth installment of community service events, known as Dean Corps, carried out in Ames. Other events have included trail building at Hickory Grove Park and volunteering at the YMCA wilderness run. Dean Corps is a perfect example of giving back to the community through political involvement.
All too often, politics just involve making phone calls, canvassing and going to the polls. The ISU Cyclones for Dean join students across the country to hold Dean Corps events throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for students to take part in a political campaign that’s changing the way young people are involved in politics.
