LETTER: Student votes will make a difference

For too long, student voices have gone unheeded in Iowa. The Ames City Council has passed ordinances placing what many see as unfair restrictions on housing options for students. The state continues to trim money away from the university system, resulting in higher tuition payments. Students always complain, but they always end up losing out in the end.

How can we as students end this losing streak? There is only one answer: We need to vote. We also need to make sure our less politically-conscious peers become more aware of the issues in the upcoming city elections, and then make it to the polls.

To this end, GSB has created a committee on student voting. We have the information, and we have the materials. All we need now are students who also recognize this problem, and want to spend a few hours volunteering to help solve it.

There are approximately 27,000 students here at Iowa State. That’s four times the number of votes cast in the most heated city election in recent history. Our votes will make a difference.

Come to the Cardinal Room in the Memorial Union tonight at 5:30 p.m. to learn more about how you can be a part of this campaign. With your help, we can change the face of politics at Iowa State.
