ISU Police search for Beyer Hall vandals
October 28, 2003
ISU Police are looking for five juvenile males who were seen leaving Beyer Hall Sunday morning in connection with vandalism and criminal mischief that occurred in the building.
The word “C-Block” and the letters “G.D.N.” covered the lockers and walls of a locker room reserved for faculty and staff at Beyer Hall.
Written in spray paint, the word “C-Block” spread across 10 lockers and a star-like symbol was on nearby lockers.
A can of black spray paint was found in a sink just below a paint- covered mirror.
In a main hallway, “C-Block” was also sprayed on brick walls.
“It’s terribly unfortunate,” said Michael Harvey, director of recreation services.
“[State Gym and Beyer Hall] are older facilities and challenging enough to keep up without using more resources to keep away this behavior,” he said.
Harvey said a supervisor was called to the locker room after a volunteer spotted suspicious activity. The supervisor then saw two males run from the locker room and meet up with three other individuals.
“[It looks to be a] pre-meditated, thought-out kind of thing,” Harvey said. “It distracts from the facility. It’s a senseless act.”
The suspects are believed to be between the ages of 8 to 14 years old, Harvey said.
“It hurts a community like ours that’s so open,” said Jerry Stewart, director of the Department of Public Safety.
Harvey said the facility and staff locker room is less used than other areas of the building, which may have been a reason for it being targeted.
No part of Beyer Hall was closed because of the vandalism, Harvey said.
The paint has been removed from the locker room and brick walls.
The incident is still under investigation by ISU Police. Ames Police officers have also been notified of the incident.
