Men’s golf team hopes to dig out of low-finish rut
October 5, 2003
Since winning the first tournament of the year, the ISU men’s golf team has had to settle for disappointing sixth- and seventh-place finishes in their last two tournaments.
The Cyclones hope to end that streak Monday and Tuesday at the Nestl‚ Purina Classic in St. Charles, Mo.
Two new Cyclones will be making their collegiate debuts at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club. Freshmen Rodney Hamblin and Paul Huddle both made the roster in qualifying rounds in practice last week.
Head coach Jay Horton is hoping the new faces will mean lower scores for the team.
“Both guys have been playing real well in practice, and they came back and qualified and beat out the other guys,” Horton said.
Also making the trip to Missouri are sophomores Tyler Swanson and Drew Dalziel. Redshirt senior Jeremy Lyons, the Cyclones top-finisher at last week’s Baylor Invitational, hopes to continue his hot streak. Redshirt freshman Curtis Foster will play as an individual.
Last year, Iowa State finished third at the Nestl‚ Purina behind Illinois and host Missouri.
Coach Horton said another third-place finish would be a disappointment for his team.
The team will be counting on newcomers Hamblin and Huddle to post good scores, Dalziel said.
“It really takes the pressure off the rest of the team when we aren’t counting on one or two guys to shoot low rounds,” Dalziel said.
Horton agreed.
“The last two tournaments we’ve only had solid play out of one or two guys. For us to be successful we have to have solid play out of all five guys.”
The Cyclones play their first 36 holes Monday. The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday morning.
