LETTER: Misrepresentations plague all cultures

I am confused by Ryan Loneman’s assertion in his online feedback printed Oct. 16 titled, “European heritages have been hijacked,” that it is “time to take … America back.” I’m not sure who he thinks has stolen his culture, but I find it odd to make such an assertion in a state where 94 percent of the people are of European descent.

Perhaps Loneman didn’t receive the Western civilization course that most of us got in high school where Greek culture is taught as though it were the lone example of modern human society. Of course, no argument about white culture being under attack can be complete without decrying “political correctness.” I’m not exactly sure what this means, but catchy popular phrases can’t substitute for a good argument.

I do share his concern that culture is being misrepresented in favor of baseless stereotypes, but am unclear on how this is limited to particular groups. I am sure that the administration here would look favorably on your organizing an event that honored your culture, but it may be a bit more work than firing off a letter which lacks a real argument.

Who exactly are we to take America back from?
