Volleyball moves to 2-9 in Big 12 after loss to Nebraska
October 27, 2003
Nebraska shut out Iowa State twice Saturday — a 28-0 romp in football, and then a commanding 3-0 volleyball match victory.
The Cyclones lost to the No. 11 Cornhuskers for the second time this season.
The loss dropped the Cyclones to a 10-12 record overall and 2-9 in the Big 12 conference, while Nebraska improved to 17-3 overall.
The Huskers dominated the match both offensively and defensively. They hit .307 from the floor and had 58 digs and had only 19 hitting errors. Iowa State was held to 22 kills for the match and had a hitting percentage of .016. The Cyclones also had 49 digs, with six block assists and one solo block.
Iowa State had its share of problems in games one and two. The Cyclones managed only seven kills in the first game, while Nebraska had 19 kills and took the game 30-17. In the second, Iowa State was held to just three kills, and the Huskers had 17 kills, on the way to a 30-18 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Senior Brittany Dalager said the Cyclones struggled in the first two games.
“Once we got our ball handling down in the third game, we really competed with them,” Dalager said. “We just didn’t take advantage of certain opportunities. Nebraska was really digging a lot of our shots, and we were serving aggressively.”
Iowa State played a solid game three. The Cyclones pounded out 12 kills, but the Cornhuskers had 22 kills and held on to win the third game 30-28 and take the match 3-0.
“We started off very slowly,” head coach Linda Crum said.
“I thought we passed very well in the third game. We took some good swings, and we were relaxed and focused. Our kids pushed them right up until the end. A couple of points either way, and we would have taken the third game. I am proud of our kids, especially in game three.”
For the match, Renae Pruess led the Cyclones with seven kills and eight digs, while Dalager had six kills and 14 digs.
“Overall, we didn’t ball handle well in games one and two,” Crum said. “Once we got going, we played well in game three. I thought Renae Pruess had a nice match, and Brittany Dalager played a solid defensive match. Nicole Lorenzen was solid in her ball handling, and she did a lot of good things for us that aren’t going to show up on a stat sheet.”
Iowa State returns home on Wednesday night for a match against Colorado. The match is set for 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
