LETTER: Promoting general an unwise decision
October 27, 2003
On Thursday, Oct. 23, the Senate Armed Services Committee confirmed President Bush’s nomination of Major General Robert T. Clark for promotion to Lieutenant General, the Army’s second-highest rank. The appointment now moves to the Senate floor for a full vote.
During Gen. Clark’s command at Fort Campbell, Ky., the base suffered command-wide low morale, inadequate delivery of healthcare to soldiers and their families, widespread, leader-condoned underage drinking in barracks and a spike in domestic abuse cases.
Gen. Clark implemented a policy at Ft. Campbell that saw record numbers of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons being discharged from the base. Clark failed to prevent the harassment and assault of suspected LGBT soldiers.
The result of these failures of command led to the brutal murder of Private First Class Barry Winchell. PFC Winchell was bludgeoned to death in his sleep by fellow soldiers who believed he was gay.
Please send your senators an e-mail or call them and ask that they oppose the promotion of General Clark based on his failures at Ft. Campbell.
