LETTER: President, students encourage voting

We hope you are doing well in your studies this semester and are taking advantage of extracurricular opportunities at Iowa State. Among those opportunities is the right to vote.

People across the world are fighting for something Americans enjoy as a birthright, and it is so important we exercise our right to vote. As a U.S. citizen, you have regular opportunities to exercise your right to vote, and your vote matters in our political process.

To exercise the franchise, you must first register. If you live in Ames during the academic year, you are considered a resident at your current address. Some of you may wish to register in your home county or state, which you may do. To register, please fill out the required form, which you will find at www.sos.state.ia. us/PDFS/voteapp.pdf. You may mail it as directed, or drop it off at the GSB office in the East Student Office Space in the Memorial Union.

The deadline to register is Oct. 24. Please exercise your rights and demonstrate students want to be involved in the political process, making their voices heard on matters of concern to them.

For your information, the next opportunity to exercise the franchise will be local elections scheduled throughout Iowa for Tuesday, Nov. 4.

For those students who are not citizens of Iowa and cannot vote in our elections, and for those who wish to have more of an influence than just their single vote, volunteering for a registration drive is a wonderful way to become involved.

The Government of the Student Body is sponsoring ISU Vote, a program with just such a goal.

For information on how you can participate, please e-mail [email protected].

We urge you to register to vote and to exercise your right to vote — it’s the American way and it will influence the political process.
