LETTER: Stereotypes abound within every race
October 29, 2003
I had never heard about the game “Ghettopoly” until I saw a clip about the game being pulled from Urban Outfitters stores because the game’s creator, David Chang, was being sued by Hasbro, the maker of Monopoly, for copyright violations.
When I saw the story, I was happy to see the rip-off being pulled, not because I thought it was racist, but rather because I like Monopoly. I don’t like Urban Outfitters, and I seriously doubt Urban Outfitters or David Chang know much about the ghetto.
Growing up as a minority in this country, you are going to hear jokes about your race regardless of your economic status. I think the “Tolerant Test” William Lincoln informed us of in his Oct. 24 letter, “Society too uptight about race issues,” is flawed. Though some people aren’t sensitive about their race, others are and that’s okay.
Lincoln mentioned white trash is often mocked on TV and in books. He’s right — I’ve seen Jerry Springer. He failed to realize blacks face the same stereotypes. Have you seen the movie Friday? Whether it’s about black or white people, when done correctly, it’s funny.
Blacks being arrested for murder does not make cops racist. Cops shooting an innocent, unarmed black man is a result of racism. Jokes about blacks are not necessarily racist — racist jokes about black people are.
